Classroom Assessor Course (Units 1 & 3)
Level 3 Award in Assessing Vocational Skills (AVS). Qualifies you to assess learners in a classroom or simulated environment for any type of courses in the UK.
This course is suitable for anyone who wants to assess learners in a classroom or simulated environment. This course is for you if your subject area uses assessment methods such as tests, quizzes, portfolios, presentations, Q&A, simulation or role-play etc
Classroom-based assessments are suitable for most teachers in a traditional school or college setting as well as vocations where the assessments take place in a learning environment rather than 'on-the-job'. This includes accountancy, functional skills assessor, corporate learning and development, first aid assessor and private security SIA trainer assessors.
If you don't have any learners yet you can do the theory-only assessor course.
Our L3 Skills Assessor course is 100% online and completely self-paced, so it suits the busiest of learners and also those who like to take their studies at their own pace. We allow 6 months for completion but most students can complete this within 2-3 weeks.

Classroom Skills Assessor Course Duration: 6 months
This online Classroom Assessor qualification allows you to assess in the classroom only. We will conduct a detailed personalised 1:1 initial assessment/interview with you before you begin your Level 3 Assessor course.
If you don't assess learners currently, then you should do the assessor theory only unit - L3 Award in Understanding Principles and Practices of Assessment.
If you assess your learners in the workplace only then you should choose the L3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment.
If you assess learners in the workplace AND in the classroom then please go for the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA).
This course is available for all candidates who fulfil the following criteria set by the Awarding Organisations:
Age range: 19+
Core skills: There are no formal entry requirements for this training course however candidate must have reading and writing skills in order to complete the course
Access to Internet using a laptop / pc / tablet using up to date Windows, Android or Apple operating systems.
Access to two learners who you can assess in the classroom.
Unit 1: Understanding the Principles of Practice of Assessment
LO1 Understand the principles and requirements of assessment

LO2: Understand different types of assessment method

LO3 Understand how to plan assessment
- Summarise key factors to consider when planning assessment
- Evaluate the benefits of using a holistic approach to assessment
- Explain how to plan a holistic approach to assessment
- Summarise the types of risks that may be involved in assessment in own area of responsibility
- Explain how to minimize risks through the planning process
LO4 Understand how to involve learners and others in assessment
- Explain the importance of involving the learner and others in the assessment process
- Summarise types of information that should be made available to learners and others involved in the assessment process
- Explain how peer and self-assessment can be used effectively to promote learner involvement and personal responsibility in the assessment of learning
- Explain how assessment arrangements can be adapted to meet the needs of individual learners.
LO5 Understand how to make assessment decisions
- Explain how to judge whether evidence is sufficient, authentic, current
- Explain how to ensure that assessment decisions are made against specified criteria, valid, reliable, fair
LO6 Understand quality assurance of the assessment process

Unit 3 Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge, and Understanding
LO1 Be able to prepare assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
Select methods to assess vocational skills, knowledge and understanding which address learner needs and meet assessment requirements, including:
- assessments of the learner in simulated environments
- skills tests
- oral and written questions
- assignments
- projects
- case studies
- recognising prior learning
- Prepare resources and conditions for the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
- Communicate the purpose, requirements and processes of assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding to learners.
LO2 Be able to carry out assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
- Manage assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding to meet assessment requirements
- Provide support to learners within agreed limitations
- Analyse evidence of learner achievement
- Make assessment decisions relating to vocational skills, knowledge and understanding against specified criteria
- Follow standardization procedures
- Provide feedback to the learner that affirms achievement and identifies any further implications for learning, assessment and progression.
LO3 Be able to provide required information following the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
- Maintain records of the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding, its outcomes and learner progress
- Make assessment information available to authorised colleagues as required
- Follow procedures to maintain the confidentiality of assessment information
LO4 Be able to maintain legal and good practice requirements when assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
- Follow relevant policies, procedures and legislation relating to the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding, including those for health, safety and welfare
- Apply requirements for equality and diversity and, where appropriate, bilingualism
- Evaluate own work in carrying out assessments of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
- Take part in continuing professional development to ensure current expertise and competence in assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding
Unit 1: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment
Assessed by short theory assignments x 7
Assignments can be presented in various formats, including written discussion, tables, graphics, screenshots or examples of work-based evidence.
Work documents can be used instead of theory assignments e.g. assessment reports, policies, procedures, assessment records etc
Unit 3: Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding
Work documents including:
2 x initial assessment paperwork, 4 x assessment plans using a different assessment method each, assessment records.
Wherever possible we will work with you to fulfil the assessment criteria using your existing work evidence.
