1. Reading (Level 1)

• Overview: This unit focuses on helping learners read and understand longer, more detailed texts from various sources, including newspapers, instructions, advertisements, and informational leaflets.
• Skills Covered:
  • Extracting key information from a variety of texts.
  • Recognizing different formats, styles, and purposes of written material.
  • Inferring meaning and interpreting opinions and ideas.
• Assessment: Learners will complete a Pearson-devised assessment based on reading tasks, which could include reading articles, reports, or longer instructions.
• Duration: Approximately 60 guided learning hours (GLH).

2. Speaking and Listening (Level 1)

• Overview: This unit helps learners develop the ability to participate in more detailed and structured conversations, listen effectively, and adapt speech for different audiences and purposes.

  • Engaging in discussions on various topics.
  • Expressing opinions clearly and listening actively to others.
  • Responding to instructions and spoken information.
• Assessment: A Pearson-devised practical assessment that involves participating in structured conversations or group discussions.
• Duration: Approximately 120 guided learning hours (GLH).

3. Writing (Level 1)

• Overview: This unit focuses on developing learners' writing skills for more formal contexts. Learners will practice writing letters, emails, reports, and completing forms accurately.
• Skills Covered:
  • Writing clear, detailed texts with proper structure, grammar, and spelling.
  • Adapting writing style to the audience and purpose, such as writing formal letters or completing job applications.
  • Using appropriate tone, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
• Assessment: Learners will undertake a Pearson-devised writing assessment, which may include tasks such as drafting formal letters or writing reports.
• Duration: Approximately 90 guided learning hours (GLH).

Unit-Based Assessments: Each unit is assessed separately with Pearson-devised tasks. Learners can complete individual unit assessments and receive certification for specific units if they prefer to focus on one skill area (reading, speaking/listening, or writing).

• Learners must be at least 16 years old.
• No prior qualifications or knowledge of English is required, but learners are expected to have completed Entry Level 3 or equivalent skills.

Upon completion of the Level 1 Certificate in ESOL Skills for Life, learners can:

The full course typically takes 270 guided learning hours (GLH), and learners can complete the course over 3 to 6 months depending on their pace. Individual units (reading, writing, or speaking and listening) are designed to take between 60 to 120 GLH.
